Prevention Strategies for Teachers

The following are some strategies for preventing severe allergic reactions in schools:
- Always place children in the care of people who know they have an allergy.
- Ensure easy access of epinephrine auto-injector and individual Anaphylaxis Emergency Plan.
- Minimize the allergen where possible (i.e. ask parents to not send peanut butter, egg sandwiches to school).
- Have children with allergies eat in a designated area.
- Provide training to staff on severe allergic reactions and educate them on the special needs of particular children.
- Educate children on allergy issues.
- Distribute resource materials and ensure these materials are accessible.
Sabrina's Law

Sabrina Shannon was an inspirational teenager who tragically suffered a fatal
anaphylactic reaction during her first year of high school in 2003. The Ontario government passed a law, which became effective on January 1st, 2006, in honour of Sabrina.
Sabrina's Law requires every school board in Ontario to establish and maintain a anaphylaxis policy.
